Financial Risk & Opportunity Matrix – Custom Power BI Visual
Objective
This custom Power BI visual is designed to assess financial health across departments or investments by plotting risk versus opportunity in a 2x2 matrix. It supports scenario analysis, strategic decision-making, and prioritization of actions based on financial impact and potential gains. The visual includes filtering, license validation, and CSV export features to empower business users with rich insights.
Key Elements of the Visual Logic
User Inputs
The visual accepts multiple inputs from the Power BI interface through dropdowns, filters, and license input fields:
- Risk and Opportunity Selection (riskMetric, opportunityMetric): Users select metrics for the X (Risk) and Y (Opportunity) axes.
- Dropdown Filters: These filters allow users to limit data to specific categories:
- Business Units
- Departments
- Investment Types
- Time Periods
- License Input Field: Enables premium features like data export and advanced interactivity when a valid license is entered.
Quadrant Classification
The visual places each data point in a quadrant based on its risk and opportunity values:
- Quadrant I (Top Right): High Risk and High Opportunity – Strategic but risky.
- Quadrant II (Top Left): Low Risk and High Opportunity – Ideal investments.
- Quadrant III (Bottom Left): Low Risk and Low Opportunity – Stable, low-impact.
- Quadrant IV (Bottom Right): High Risk and Low Opportunity – Avoid or reevaluate.
Visual Rendering Logic
The chart uses D3 or SVG to dynamically render data points:
- Shapes and Colors: Points are colored and shaped based on category or business unit.
- Tooltip on Hover: Shows relevant data like:
- Business Name
- Risk Score
- Opportunity Score
- Responsive Layout: Automatically adapts to canvas size in Power BI reports.
Filtering and Interaction
- Interactive Filtering: Dropdowns and slicers allow users to isolate key segments of the data.
- License-Gated Features: Export and filtering are disabled until a valid license is validated.
License Validation
- Decryption Logic: A pre-shared encrypted key is decrypted and matched to activate premium features.
- Feature Control: If the license is invalid, dropdowns and buttons are hidden from the UI.
Output: Matrix View
The matrix chart is interactive and updates as the user changes input. It shows:
- Positioning of each item on the Risk vs. Opportunity matrix
- Shape and color coding for business category or investment type
- Dynamic tooltip with key financial metrics
Detailed Breakdown of Returned Data
- Risk Score: Numerical value placed on the X-axis to represent exposure or volatility.
- Opportunity Score: Value on the Y-axis indicating growth or return potential.
- Quadrant Allocation: The visual categorizes each point into one of four quadrants based on its score combination.
- Category: The department, unit, or investment type used for grouping.
- Color: Visual distinction applied based on the category.
- Tooltip Data: Includes all key metrics shown on hover.
- Filtered Data: Reflects dropdown selections and only shows relevant points.
